Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman gets a teaser trailer and a Fall 2019 release: Watch
The highly anticipated crime drama finally drops this Fall

Tonight, Netflix surprised everyone at the Oscars by dropping the first teaser trailer for Martin Scorsese’s forthcoming crime drama, The Irishman. We don’t see much — probably because the movie isn’t even close to being finished — but it does confirm a number of things.

For starters, we definitely know it’s a Scorsese picture, and that Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, and Joe Pesci will star. But more importantly, we now know that the film will bow this Fall, as in months away, which is something of a relief considering we’ve been floating over this film for about three years.

As previously reported, The Irishman centers around a hitman and Jimmy Hoffa, as told in Charles Brandt’s 2005 non-fiction novel, I Heard You Paint Houses…., and was adapted by the great Steven Zaillian. Half of the movie will feature de-aged versions of Pacino and DeNiro.

The Irishman is an upcoming American biographical crime film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Steven Zaillian, based on the book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt. The film stars Robert De Niro as Frank Sheeran, a labor union leader and alleged hitman for the Bufalino crime family, and Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa. Joe Pesci, Anna Paquin, Bobby Cannavale, Harvey Keitel, and Ray Romano also star. It is the ninth feature collaboration between De Niro and Scorsese, the fourth film to star both De Niro and Pacino (following The Godfather Part II, Heat and Righteous Kill) and the first time Pacino has been directed by Scorsese.

The Irishman was always a desired passion project for Scorsese, and in September 2014 it was confirmed it would be his next film following Silence (2016). Pacino and De Niro were confirmed that month, as was Pesci, who came out of his unofficial retirement to star after being asked numerous times to take the role. Filming began in New York City in September 2017, and lasted until March 2018. With a production budget as high as $200 million, it is the most expensive project of Scorsese's career. The film is expected to be released by Netflix in October 2019. Also, according to Robert De Niro, the film will have a theatrical release, but it will be a limited release.[3]

io sì. monumentale.
l'epitaffio scorsesiano di un'epoca e di un genere.
joe pesci sopra a tutti dall'inizio alla fine, ma anche al pacino è assolutamente fenomenale. bob de niro è la quintessenza dell'essere umano nella sua più profonda insondabilità.
tre ore e mezza di godimento e sofferenza. siamo lontanissimi da Goodfellas e anche da Casinò, qui a mio avviso ci si avvicina più alla gravità de Il Padrino (soprattutto il secondo).

Menzione d'onore per Tony Pro. Da quando lo vedo sullo schermo cimentarsi in ruoli di gangster penso che sia perfetto per quella parte in qualunque sfaccettatura del personaggio.

Se dovessi fare un appunto forse mi aspettavo di più dalla colonna sonora.

si è anche in questo senso che dicevo che è lontanissimo da Goodfellas e anche da Casinò. In questo film non c'è alcun tipo di celebrazione né di attrattività, neppure musicale, non c'è rock'n roll né discomusic, non ci sono occhiolini pop, e non ci sono personaggi "fighi". ci sono gangster, politici, killer e sindacalisti (tutti sintomaticamente mescolati). Anche per questo dicevo che è semmai più vicino alla gravità de Il Padrino, pur senza la musica di Nino Rota.

questo tema, però, che compare in diverse sequenze, è comunque perfetto per definire il mood del film.

È il canto del cigno di questo genere di cinema. Probabilmente non di Scorsese che se non erro sta già iniziando a lavorare al suo nuovo progetto forse con Di Caprio, però è la fine di un'epoca.

Mi è piaciuto un sacco perché non è autocelebrativo, per niente. Il piano sequenza iniziale non è scimmiottamento di quello di Goodfellas, ma ne è una trasposizione greve e pesante perfetta per il mood del film. Da una parte il club figo, dall'altra un'ospizio con un vecchio killer ormai solo. In tutto il film Scorsese trasfigura i suoi stilemi in un affresco che alla fine mi sento quasi di chiamare "neo-realista". È un mood molto più vicino a Silence che a Casinò. Ho apprezzato davvero questo intento, Scorsese non si guarda mai allo specchio per auto-compiacersi (e di esempi che fanno il contrario il cinema è pieno, Sorrentino in primis) e dimostra ancora una volta la sua appartenenza ai padri del cinema. In più in questi tempi dove i nuovi gangster-movie finiscono per cadere spesso nella pericolosa celebrazione fine a se stessa, ci voleva un grande che rimettesse le cose a posto.

Sì, neorealista mi sembra il termine migliore. La recitazione riempie i lunghi vuoti, la trama volge verso l'inevitabile conclusione senza svolte né scossoni ma senza degenerare in noia perché c'è sempre questa o quella sfaccettatura da apprezzare. Il cast mantiene le promesse.

Però tre ore e mezza è dura.
