It's official:
Vince Vaughn has joined
Colin Farrell in the cast for the second season of
True Detective, keeping anyone hopeful for the recruitment of a female or PoC in suspense. The Irish actor will be picking up the reigns of the hugely successful show, from the season one stars, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. But can he and Vince maintain the huge success of the show?
Still, it's not over yet, as there will in fact be four lead roles in the new series, and whispers are that at least one will be a woman. Small mercies, right? The plot will revolve around a trio of officers and a career criminal; all set on untangling a complex conspiracy after a murder. Farrell's character is Ray Velcoro, a detective with unclear intentions and a distinct conflict of interests between the police and the mob; while Vaughn is due to play Frank Semyon, the aforementioned career criminal whose first foray into a legal enterprise is threatened when a business partner bites the dust.
And the fan reactions? Not altogether brilliant. "Well I don't think anyone called two straight white men. #TrueDetectiveSeason2", wrote @nightfeather123, while Richard Lawson tweeted: "So True Detective season 2 is about a bowling team?". @PoarchDaniel quipped: "Going from McConaughey and Harrellson to Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell is like trading in your HDTV for an Etch-a-Sketch"; and Steve Amiri wrote: "True Detective is going to be an hour of Vince Vaughn trying to "hug it out" with suspects while Colin Farrell tries to bang widows."
But then, didn't Woody Harrelson surprise a lot of people too? Maybe Vince and Colin will do the same...
Series creator Nic Pizzolatto is back to write all eight episodes, with shooting slated to begin in just a few weeks' time ahead of a January airdate. Matthew McConaughey and Harrelson played the leads in the first season, which won multiple plaudits and awards.
Other names who have been rumoured for parts include Rachel McAdams and Mad Men's Elizabeth Moss, as well as Taylor Kitsch and Rosario Dawson.
So two down, two to go... Who are you hopeful to be cast?
