The Witcher's Netflix series will release in 2019
Progress on Netflix's planned The Witcher series has been rapid, recently announcing that Henry Cavill will be taking the role of Geralt of Rivia within the series.
It has now been confirmed that the series will release sometime in 2019, before the series' original 2020 release timeframe. The series finale is now being written, with more casting announcements being expected shortly. Now, all that's left to do is film and produce the series itself, which is expected to be filmed in Europe.
Netflix appears to be fast-tracking the series, likely due to the popularity of The Witcher franchise, which has seen success as both a book series and through CD Projekt Red's The Witcher game series.
In a recent set of tweets, Lauren S. Hissrich, the producer behind The Witcher's Netflix adaptation, discussed the decision to cast Henry Cavill, who recently appeared in Man of Steel and Justice League, as Geralt of Rivia, the series protagonist. Below are her comments on the casting decision.
I met Henry in April. Over the next four months, I met/reviewed hundreds of other potential leads, many of whom were amazing. But what I never forgot was Henry's deeply insightful understanding of Geralt's strength and brutality, and more importantly, his wit and vulnerability. Because as a fan of the franchise, Henry saw beyond the script pages. He saw the human connection that Geralt perpetually needs, even if he denies it, kicking and screaming at every turn. What I saw was Geralt's heart, in Henry.
